Silent Auction: A Chance to Dine with Some of The Violet World’s Greatest Innovators

As you may have noticed, the speakers at this year’s event are coming from  outside the Mid-Atlantic area. Nancy Kast, a popular renowned grower of both violets and other gesneriads hails from Florida, as does Thad Scaggs who is going to talk  about hybridizing. Our instructor for judging school, Paul Kroll, is probably the  closest and he’ll fly over 400 miles to get here. And, of course, Dr. Jeff Smith, probably  the most renowned expert in the area of species, hails from the middle of the country. How would you like to eat dinner with one of these experts? Wouldn’t it be great  to hear their off-the-cuff remarks when discussing their specialties? They will be  joining us on Friday and/or Saturday night for dinner. Rather than have a stampede as we head  into the dining room, we’ve decided to hold a silent auction for the right to sit at  their tables for dinner. On Friday and Saturday mornings we’ll put a sheet of paper on the  Ways and Means table and you can bid. Bidding will close at 5 PM. Credit cards will be  accepted. The proceeds will be used to help defray the cost of bringing these fine  speakers to this event. We thank everyone who bids in advance.

Costume Party

It has been a MAAVS tradition every year to have a costume party for our Friday night banquet.    This year the tradition lives on. Join us for a night of fun. We have had Goldilocks and the 3 bears, Mother Nature, the Gortons Fisherman and a South Seas Island Palm Tree among other creations in years past.  What diamond encrusted costume might we see in Wilmington?  The rules are simple.  Make, buy or appropriate a costume that reflects the show theme.  Be creative, whimsical, funny or serious but have fun.
